Calcium has an indispensable function in our perfect, but very complex body. Do you know which foods are a good calcium source and how to consume calcium properly? Calcium together with magnesium and phosphorus, they form the basic building blocks of our skeleton and teeth. At the same time, it is very important for cell function, muscle contractions, transmission of nerve impulses and blood clotting.

Basic building material

For our bones, a regular supply of calcium is almost indispensable. It is their basic building material and its lack can have a very negative effect on your health in the form of periodontitis or osteoporosis. If you suffer from insomnia, nervousness, numbness of the upper and lower limbs, memory loss, depression, irritability and other mental disorders, you should start increasing the dose of calcium in your body.

Combine vitamin D + Calcium

In order for your body to properly absorb calcium, it is important to consume calcium along with vitamin D, which is most commonly found in fish, mushrooms, egg yolks and cereals. So those who suffer from vitamin D deficiency also suffer from calcium deficiency. You should avoid excessive amounts of protein, coffee, salt and alcohol, as these promote the excretion of calcium from the body.

Calcium sources

The basis of good health is a varied and balanced diet. Consume at least two cups of foods a day that are rich in well-absorbed calcium. These include Chinese cabbage, turnip beet leaves, leaf mustard, other cruciferous species, calcium-rich tofu. An excellent source of calcium is also poppy, which contains a huge amount of calcium, up to 1400 mg, sesame seeds, almonds, cauliflower and Brazil nuts.

Calcium paradox

Especially in the USA, calcium is consumed mainly from dairy products. The paradox is that there is a high percentage of fractures and thinning bones, especially in these countries. This is mainly related to excessive intake of proteins from animal products and sugars from processed foods, which strongly acidify the body during digestion. Our body must then use the calcium reserves from the bones to adjust the already mentioned acid-base balance. Proper calcium intake is therefore related to the overall composition of your diet.
